Phoenix Academy

Summary:

Phoenix Academy is a public high school located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 306 students. The school is part of the Lancaster School District, which is ranked 506 out of 606 districts in Pennsylvania and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Phoenix Academy stands out from the surrounding schools, such as Warwick Senior High School, Hempfield Senior High School, and Manheim Township High School, due to its significantly lower academic performance, high poverty rates, and racial disparities. The school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing high schools in Pennsylvania, with 0% proficiency in Math and English Language Arts, and only 3.3% to 16.7% proficiency in Keystone Exams. Additionally, Phoenix Academy has a low four-year graduation rate, ranging from 50.7% to 68.6%, and high dropout rates, ranging from 15.0% to 45.0%.

Despite the high per-student spending at Phoenix Academy, which ranges from $18,238 to $23,872 compared to the surrounding schools' range of $14,319 to $20,905, the school's academic outcomes are still significantly lower than the state and district averages. This suggests that the school likely faces significant challenges related to poverty, such as lack of access to resources, higher rates of absenteeism, and other socioeconomic factors that can impact academic achievement. However, the data also indicates that there may be opportunities for targeted interventions and support to help improve the school's performance and better serve its student population, which is 70.59% Hispanic, significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don’t work for this company or send your kids here. They take advantage of their employees every opportunity they have. They pay well below the industry average and seldom offer raises. Abnormally high annual employee turnover rates. Extremely low employee morale. Leadership is disconnected from staff and students. Executive Director (whatever that is?) is not certified as a Principal or a Teacher. Principal is not certified as a Principal. How does that work?? This is a “company”, not a “school”, and a bad one at that. Make no mistake about it, profits here come before anything else. In the process of exposing multiple, documented instances of unethical and illegal activities. Forging attendance records. Changing failing grades to passing grades. Manipulating graduation numbers/rates to maximize funding. Hostile work environment. Workplace bullying claims to HR go unanswered and swept under the carpet. No supplies ever on hand for teachers and students, copier/printer rarely functions, yet somehow the leadership team and their “chosen few” regularly have questionably expensive lunches, paid for by the “company credit card”. Wings are their favorite. Paid little to no attention to federal, state and SDOL safety mandates throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Some on the leadership team don’t even understand square footage or how to calculate it. Stay away from this toxic wasteland at all costs. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
