Hempfield Senior High School

Summary:

Hempfield Senior High School is a public high school located in Landisville, PA, serving 2,268 students in grades 9-12. As part of the Hempfield School District, which is ranked 94 out of 606 districts in Pennsylvania and has a 4-star rating, Hempfield Senior High School consistently outperforms the state and many nearby schools in academic metrics, graduation rates, and racial diversity.

Hempfield Senior High School's academic performance is particularly impressive, with significantly higher proficiency rates on the Keystone Exams compared to the state average. In 2022-2023, the school had 59.7% proficiency in Algebra I, 68% in Biology, and 72.9% in Literature, all well above the state averages. The school also maintains a high four-year graduation rate of 95.2%, much higher than the state average. While the student population is predominantly white (68.25%), the school has a notable Hispanic (17.5%) and Asian (4.1%) student representation, making it more diverse than many surrounding schools like McCaskey Campus and La Academia Partnership Charter School.

Hempfield Senior High School's strong performance is particularly notable for its African American student subgroup, which ranks 13th out of 260 Pennsylvania high schools in the 2022-2023 school year. This suggests the school is effectively supporting the academic achievement of this subgroup, unlike some nearby schools like McCaskey Campus. Additionally, the school's relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (33.25%) indicates a lower proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds compared to some of the nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The hempfield school district does a great job of preparing kids. We have one in 6th grade taking pre-algebra and one who just graduated and is attending a top tier liberal arts college. We moved to this school district from a rival district in the Lancaster area 7 years ago. The other district also gets rated very high, but we must say we like the way hempfield educated our kids much better Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
