While the school is part of the Lakeland School District, which is ranked 318 out of 606 districts in the state, Lakeland Junior/Senior High School itself has a lower ranking and rating compared to many of the nearby schools.

One key differentiator is the school's racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of white students (92.25%) compared to the more diverse student populations at nearby schools like West Scranton High School and Scranton High School. Academically, Lakeland Junior/Senior High School's test scores are generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in math, with only 36.3% of students proficient or better in PSSA/Math, compared to the state average of 39.3% and the district average of 46%. However, the school has seen a steady improvement in its four-year graduation rate, increasing from 83.2% in 2018-2019 to 94.8% in 2022-2023.

When compared to surrounding schools, such as Lackawanna Trail Junior/Senior High School, Valley View High School, and Abington Heights High School, Lakeland Junior/Senior High School's performance is generally lower, with these schools boasting higher rankings, better test scores, and higher graduation rates. The higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Lakeland Junior/Senior High School (33.74%) compared to the state average may be a contributing factor to the school's academic challenges, as research has shown a correlation between socioeconomic status and educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote School is starting to look better. Many updates still need to be done. Even still the school needs to concern themselves on all extra curricular activities besides football. For example they have one of the best track and field records. Also, the band and chorus need recognized as well. Teachers need to stop being friends with the students and start teaching and reprimanding. You should see the chorus director. Can not control the chorus group. They have the abilities to sing but look horrid and some want to out shine the rest. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
