Summary:

New Garden Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades 1-5 in the Kennett Consolidated School District in Toughkenamon, PA, with a student population of 463 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school has a diverse student body, with a racial makeup that is predominantly White (56.59%) and Hispanic (35.85%).

New Garden Elementary School consistently outperforms the state average in PSSA test scores, particularly in Science, where it exceeds the state average by over 18 percentage points. However, the school faces significant challenges in addressing achievement gaps between its racial and socioeconomic subgroups. While White students at the school perform exceptionally well, ranking 279 out of 1,236 Pennsylvania elementary schools, the school's Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) student subgroups perform below the state average, ranking 242 and 123 out of 432 and 196 Pennsylvania elementary schools, respectively. Additionally, the school's low-income student subgroup, which makes up 38.23% of the student population, performs poorly, ranking 1,085 out of 1,414 Pennsylvania elementary schools.

When compared to higher-performing schools in the neighboring Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, such as Pocopson Elementary, Chadds Ford Elementary, and Hillendale Elementary, New Garden Elementary School lags significantly in academic achievement, particularly in Math and Science. This highlights the need for targeted interventions and additional support to address the school's challenges in providing equitable educational opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is the most intrusive school I have ever been witness to. Instruction is good but don't ever trust the front office. They will smile to your face then stab you in the back. They have no right to my child's therapist yet they continued to press the issue. Forget the superintendent he is useless. Stay far away! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
