Norwood School

Summary:

Norwood School is an elementary school serving grades 1-8 in Norwood, PA, with a total enrollment of 548 students. The school is part of the Interboro School District, which is ranked 341 out of 606 school districts in Pennsylvania and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Norwood School has seen a gradual decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from a high of 716 in 2017-2018 to 1016 in the current 2022-2023 school year.

Academically, Norwood School's performance on PSSA tests is generally below the state and district averages. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Math (29.6%) and English Language Arts (52.4%) were lower than the state averages of 39.3% and 53.8%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly weak in Math, with proficiency rates declining across all grade levels from 3rd to 8th grade. Additionally, Norwood School ranks in the bottom 20% of Pennsylvania elementary schools for both white students and students with disabilities, indicating significant achievement gaps for these populations. The school also has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, with 61.31% of students falling into this category in the current school year.

When compared to other schools in the Interboro School District, Norwood School generally performs worse academically. For example, Tinicum School, which is also in the Interboro district, outperforms Norwood School in both Math and English Language Arts proficiency rates. Despite Norwood School's relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11.5 in the current school year, this does not appear to be a significant factor in the school's academic performance, as its spending per student ($18,600 in 2021-2022) is higher than the state average but does not translate into better outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers at this school give excellent personal attention to students. They are always available to parents and students alike. The curriculum is both challenging and made entertaining for the kids.

There is still Phys Ed, Chorus, Band, and Art as part of the standard curriculum, which I feel is critical to learning and creating an overall well rounded student.

My daughter absolutely loves this school! Her teachers are the best!

Each wing of this 1-8th grade building is divided as to keep the age levels to themselves...you have 1-2 grade in one area, 3-5 in another and 6-8 in thier own space which provides a safe learning enviroment for all.

I don't understand how this school only got a two star rating, I am supposing it is because it is weighted against all schools in PA, which is thousands. They always do well on the PSSA's here and the school spirit is fantastic. My family is moving to Florida this summer , and we found that the school we are moving to, which this site gives a five star rating...is a full year behind in curriculum. And that is from the teachers mouth to my ears. She chose the level classes my daughter is to be placed in down there, and she has completed all their grade level work for the sixth grade there while in fifth grade here. Yikes!

Anyway, if there is any doubt, don't doubt. This is a really great school! Many of the teachers hold degrees in special education as well, so IEP's are no problem! Great staff , Great school! WE have loved our time here! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
