Charleroi Area Middle School

Summary:

Charleroi Area Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in the Belle Vernon Area School District in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. With 329 students, the school has a predominantly White student population (73.25%), along with smaller percentages of African American, Hispanic, Asian, and multiracial students.

Academically, Charleroi Area Middle School consistently underperforms compared to state and district averages on PSSA tests, with proficiency rates significantly lower than the state in Math (17.9% vs. 39.3%), Science (64.6% vs. 65.6%), and English Language Arts (53.8% vs. 53.8%). This trend has persisted over the past few years, and the school has maintained a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other middle schools in Pennsylvania. When compared to nearby schools like South Park Middle School and Elizabeth Forward Middle School, Charleroi Area Middle School generally performs worse academically.

Additionally, Charleroi Area Middle School has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 53.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the state average. This suggests a need for additional support and resources to address the challenges faced by the school's student population. While the school has maintained a 0% dropout rate, this metric alone does not provide a complete picture of student success and engagement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been retired from my Charleroi Middle School/High School for exactly two months. I taught many grades and courses of English Language Arts for 30 years. We have hired a wonderful new Superintendent, Mr. Zelich, and I have seen things moving in positive direction.

As a distressed district in a blighted town, we have a small tax base and little to work with; yet, my coworkers and I always managed to find a light at the end of a pretty dark tunnel. We did everything we could for our students and many of us gave our all to even make sure they were well-fed, clothed and had someone who cared about them. There are many programs in place to make sure that not one of our wonderful, precious children fall through the cracks. A positive leader who respects teachers, students, and parent input is exactly what our district needed. Look for Charleroi Area to start moving higher in the rankings! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
