Scotts Mills Elementary School

Summary:

Scotts Mills Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades K-8 in the Silver Falls School District 4J in Scotts Mills, Oregon, with 165 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.3. However, the school has seen a significant decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from a high of 4 stars out of 5 in 2018-2019 to just 1 star in the most recent 2023-2024 school year.

Scotts Mills Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and the state in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.1% of 3rd graders at Scotts Mills were proficient in ELA, compared to 45.2% in the district and 39% statewide. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 24.24% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, Scotts Mills Elementary has seen significant performance gaps between student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of Oregon elementary schools for both female and male students, as well as for white students.

Despite spending significantly more per student than the state average at $28,617 in 2021-2022, Scotts Mills Elementary has not been able to translate this additional funding into improved academic outcomes. The school lags behind many of the other elementary schools in the Silver Falls School District, such as Evergreen Elementary and Silver Crest Elementary, which consistently outperform Scotts Mills on state assessments. These findings suggest that Scotts Mills Elementary may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the unique needs of its student population and improve academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We have 2 children at Scott Mills School. I can't say enough about them. All the loyal staff from the Principal, Teachers, Aides and Janitor are top notch. They care deeply about all the kids that come through the door. Very involved PTCC club that funds some extras for the kids. They do a great job of developing the human inside my children, they do much more than teach to the test. And, the grades are pretty good too! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
