Lent Elementary School

Summary:

Lent Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 251 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in the state.

Despite the district's strong ranking, Lent Elementary School has consistently low academic performance, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics well below the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 36.2%, compared to 56.3% for the district and 39% for the state. The school's performance gaps are particularly significant for Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with special education needs or from low-income families.

Interestingly, the nearby Arleta Elementary School and Whitman Elementary School, which are also part of the Portland School District 1J, outperform Lent Elementary in academic measures. Even schools in the lower-ranked David Douglas School District 40 tend to have better academic outcomes than Lent Elementary. The school's relatively high per-student spending, coupled with its low performance, raises questions about the effective allocation and utilization of resources to support student learning.

Open Quote An overpaid principal equals low quality education. Scores continue to drop for most students at the school. Little to no parent involvement, those that do are treated poorly. Serious bullying and drug use is rampant at the school. Little children are routinely subjected to inappropriate language and behavior. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
