Marysville Elementary School

Summary:

Marysville Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 286 students in grades K-5. While the school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in Oregon, Marysville Elementary has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages in academic proficiency.

In the 2023-2024 school year, only 25.8% of 3rd graders, 23.7% of 4th graders, and 36.4% of 5th graders at Marysville Elementary were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the district's 56.3%, 55.4%, and 59.6%, respectively. Similarly, in Mathematics, only 29% of 3rd graders, 22% of 4th graders, and 33.3% of 5th graders were proficient or better, compared to the district's 57%, 54.2%, and 46.8%. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Multi-racial, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students consistently ranking in the bottom 20-30% of Oregon elementary schools.

Marysville Elementary's academic struggles are further highlighted when compared to nearby schools within the Portland School District 1J. For example, Atkinson Elementary School and Creston Elementary School, both within a 1.6-mile radius of Marysville, have significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA and Mathematics, as well as higher overall school rankings and ratings. Despite Marysville's relatively high per-student spending of $32,484 and a low student-teacher ratio of 15.1 students per teacher, the school continues to struggle, suggesting that the underlying issues may be related to instructional practices, school leadership, or student and family engagement.

Open Quote My child experienced racism and unnecessary discipline from the teacher there. When I looked up the statistics on how many black children were severely disciplined vs. white children it was clear to me that this school takes more severe action against black children. Do not send your black child to this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
