Jefferson Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom third of Oregon middle schools, with rankings ranging from 261 to 354 out of 377-384 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments (OSAS) is significantly below the state average across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranging from 21.2% to 22.7%, compared to the state average of 40.6% to 43.2%, and in Mathematics, the proficiency rates were even lower, ranging from 11.8% to 13.6%, compared to the state average of 26.4% to 30.5%. The school's student population is predominantly White, with a higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 64.92% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

Nearby schools, such as Leslie Middle School, Judson Middle School, and Stayton Middle School, generally outperform Jefferson Middle School on academic measures, with higher proficiency rates on state assessments and higher overall school rankings. The low academic performance of Jefferson Middle School may be influenced by the high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and the fluctuations in staffing and resources, as evidenced by the varying student-teacher ratios, may also be a contributing factor to the school's struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have had the opportunity to visit several teacher while they were with students. I found each teachers style different, but valuable for the students. The classroom student to instructor was excellent. The teachers seemed to offer each child the direction they needed at the time they needed it. I was very impressed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
