Gordon Russell Middle School

Summary:

Gordon Russell Middle School is a public middle school located in Gresham, Oregon, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 672 students. The school is part of the Gresham-Barlow School District, which is ranked 95 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gordon Russell Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Oregon middle schools, with a ranking of 339 out of 371 in the 2023-2024 school year and a 0-star rating. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are significantly lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 16% of 6th graders, 30.3% of 7th graders, and 22.8% of 8th graders were proficient in ELA, compared to the state averages of 40.7%, 43.2%, and 40.6%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, who ranked in the bottom 10% of Oregon middle schools in ELA and Mathematics in recent years. Additionally, Gordon Russell Middle School has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 79.32% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year, significantly higher than the state and district averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Gresham-Barlow School District, such as West Orient Middle School and Dexter McCarty Middle School, generally perform better than Gordon Russell Middle School in academic metrics, with higher proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. However, these nearby schools also have higher percentages of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, suggesting that the challenges faced by Gordon Russell Middle School may be more systemic within the district. Additionally, Gordon Russell Middle School's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past decade, indicating that the school's academic performance has not kept pace with the state's overall improvement in student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to this school and if my grammar and spelling show how good this school is not you see why I give it one star. After attending this school, the bullies made learning impossible. The staff made life harder. I was suspended for everything you can imagine and not what you would think. I dropped a ketchup packet and suspended for creating a slip hazard. I tore, neatly a mocking comment off my report card and I was suspended. My home work and class was "lost" by other students and I failed. Attending this school derailed my education. I live with that every day. This school is one to avoid.
I had problems, but the biggest was the staff allowed harassment and bullying that affects me to this day. I gave up on learning because it was not possible to learn and defend myself at the same time. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
