Summit High School

Summary:

Summit High School is a public high school located in Bend, Oregon, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,444 students. The school is part of the Bend-LaPine Administrative School District 1, which is ranked 27th out of 139 districts in Oregon and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Summit High School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (89.2%) compared to nearby schools, its academic performance has seen a decline in recent years, dropping from a high ranking of 13th out of 292 Oregon high schools in 2014-2015 to 138th out of 258 in 2022-2023. This decline is reflected in the school's test scores, which are generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in mathematics. However, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with the school ranking highly for its Hispanic students (14th out of 134 Oregon high schools in 2022-2023) but much lower for its white students (175th out of 237) and gifted and talented students (67th out of 75).

Another notable factor is Summit High School's relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (5.96% in 2022-2023), which is significantly lower than the nearby Marshall High School (62.6%) and Realms High School (44.58%), indicating that Summit High School serves a more affluent student population compared to its neighbors. This socioeconomic factor may have implications for the school's resource allocation, instructional approaches, and the support services it provides to students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers are great, but the students are all the same. There is no diversity what so ever at Summit High School. Everyone there comes from a high class/wealthy family, and they all aren't that nice. Of course, there are a few nice kids but the majority of them are in their own little cliques. Not that great of a school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
