Shore Middle School

Summary:

Shore Middle School is a public middle school located in Mentor, Ohio, serving 728 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Mentor Exempted Village School District, which is ranked 193 out of 839 districts in Ohio and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Shore Middle School consistently outperforms the state average in proficiency rates for Ohio State Tests across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, 69.7% of 8th-grade students were proficient or better in Science, compared to the state average of 62.1%. The school also stands out with an exceptionally high proficiency rate in Algebra I, with 98.5% of students scoring proficient or better in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the state average of 55.9%. However, the school faces challenges in addressing chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 8.6% in 2019-2020 to 25% in 2022-2023, higher than the state average.

Comparing Shore Middle School to nearby high-performing schools, such as Memorial Middle School and Kirtland Middle School, can provide valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration and learning. While Shore Middle School's overall performance is strong, the school's performance for students with disabilities and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds is relatively lower, ranking in the 300s out of 563 and 989 Ohio middle schools, respectively. Addressing the root causes of the increasing chronic absenteeism should be a priority for the school and district to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter is currently at this school. We have had so many issues with academic's. She is not getting the proper help that she needs. She is on a IEP for OHI. I’m not pleased with someone on her team. She is struggling with academics this year and we are still not getting academics support. I do have to say another member of her team has done nothing but support her in so many different ways.

When it comes to bullying the school needs to do more! We have things put in place against another student and the school itself is not following or Disciplining the student that continues to break the rules. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
