Cheviot School

Summary:

Cheviot School is an elementary school in Cincinnati, Ohio, serving 569 students in grades PK-7 as part of the Cincinnati Public Schools district, which is ranked 597 out of 839 districts in the state.

Cheviot School has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (57.82%) and multi-racial (11.25%) students. Academically, the school's performance on state tests is generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in mathematics and science, but it performs better than the district average in English Language Arts. The school also has a significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate (47.1%) compared to state and district averages, which is a concerning metric. Cheviot School performs better in ranking for African American students (ranked 200 out of 610 Ohio elementary schools) compared to other student subgroups, such as White students (ranked 970 out of 1215) and Gifted and Talented students (ranked 64 out of 108). The school's spending per student ($11,106) is slightly higher than the nearby schools in the Cincinnati Public Schools district.

When compared to the higher-performing Oak Hills Local and Northwest Local districts, Cheviot School's academic performance and other metrics are significantly lower, highlighting the disparities in educational opportunities within the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The school's diverse student population and some areas of strength, such as in English Language Arts and for African American students, suggest that targeted interventions and support could help improve the school's overall outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is undergoing a reinvention process. When the current principal took over a few years ago, it was apparently not at all welcoming, but I have never had a problem with getting in touch with teachers or staff since my child started school here. The movement towards being a "Leader in Me" school is definitely pushing the staff towards innovation and the students towards success. I can't wait to see how the changes improve the culture of Cheviot even more. Close Quote

Open Quote Cheviot is a great school. The principal, Mrs. Solomon-Gray, has a clear and focused direction. The school is very diverse which allows opportunities for extended learning and teachers and staff are on their A game. Custodial workers keep the building nice, clean, and well-maintained. The school is headed in the right direction and with the addition to becoming a Leader in Me school, Cheviot is creating a legacy for all other Cincinnati Public Schools to follow. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has been attending Cheviot for 5 years now and it is an excellent school. The teachers are great and always communicate with me if she has a problem with one of her classes and needs extra help. I am also a part of the National PTA as well for the school. Its a great organization that I am involved with and the board members are also great because they are parents as well and want nothing but the best for their kids at Cheviot. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers are wonderful and work closely with each student. The teachers are very clear about what the child needs to work on most, which is very helpful for a parent to know what to work on with their child. Cheviot had many wonderful programs to get the kids involved, even with academics! My daughter recently joined the Literacy Lab and her reading skills have improved greatly! There are many opportunities to get together as a community and the kids love it. All the teachers and staff are very wonderful and extremely nice. Close Quote

Open Quote Both my children have went to Cheviot their entire primary years. One is now in HS and my daughter is still there in 6th grade. The teachers are great here!! My children have always been A honor roll and scored exceptionally high on all achievement testing. This is a great neighborhood school with a great staff!! Besides the staff there is a National PTA there now in which supports the school 100%and helps to give the students a sense of community. There is now a before and after school program to help working parents, a literacy lab for tutoring, a garden club, art club, choir, girls on the run fitness group, glee club and coming soon a student store and parent lending center for reading materials and books. This neighborhood elementary school is definitely on its way to excellence. It takes an entire community to raise a child not just a parent or their school. I would recommend Cheviot as a great little community with a GREAT BIG school!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
