Washington Park Community School

Summary:

Washington Park Community School is a public charter elementary school in Newburgh Heights, OH that serves 173 students in grades K-8. The school has a diverse student population, with 61.85% White, 19.08% African American, and 13.29% Hispanic students.

Despite its diverse enrollment, Washington Park Community School consistently ranks in the bottom 15% of Ohio elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its proficiency rates on state tests are significantly below the state averages across all grade levels and subjects. The school has also experienced a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 30.4% in 2019-2020 to 83.4% in 2023-2024, more than double the state average. Additionally, the school serves a high proportion of low-income students and has struggled with staffing, with the student-teacher ratio fluctuating from 19.2 to 89.5 over the past few years, well above the state average.

In contrast, Cuyahoga Hts Elementary School, which is just 1.78 miles away, consistently ranks in the top 15% of Ohio elementary schools and has much higher proficiency rates and lower chronic absenteeism. The combination of low socioeconomic status, high student-teacher ratio, and other challenges faced by Washington Park Community School may be contributing to its poor academic outcomes, and addressing these underlying issues could be crucial for improving student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Please take a look at the overall school ranking. It is literally one of the worst in the state. An F on the state report card is the outcome each year. The middle school principal has zero qualifications for the position. She was a poor kindergarten teacher that got the position because she keeps her mouth shut about the deplorable conditions within this school. There is mold in the basement, and bullying incidents are ignored. Go to any other school rating site and hopefully you can see the true picture. Not the rosy picture the administration paints. Stay away. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
