Minetto Elementary School

Summary:

Minetto Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in the Oswego City School District, with 390 students located in Minetto, NY. While the school has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools, with a 2 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger, a closer look reveals some interesting insights.

Minetto Elementary School's performance on New York State Assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math is generally below the state and district averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 27.59% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 42.6% statewide and 21.98% in the Oswego City School District. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with male students and white students outperforming the school's overall ranking, while students with disabilities and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds perform significantly worse.

Interestingly, when compared to nearby schools, such as New Haven Elementary and Fairley School, Minetto Elementary's performance is significantly better. However, the school's higher spending per student, which has increased from $14,280 in 2019-2020 to $19,014 in 2022-2023, does not appear to have translated into improved academic outcomes. Additionally, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.3 to 11.6 over the past few years, suggests that the school may have sufficient resources and support for its students, but the academic performance data does not reflect this.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Minetto is a wonderful elementary school. I firmly believe that a child's educational foundation is formed at the elementary school. The teachers there truly care about the students and believe in no child left behind! They work with the kids to make them want to learn. They are caring and nurturing of their students. My kids did exceptionally well at Minetto. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
