Onteora Middle School

Summary:

Onteora Middle School is a public middle school located in Boiceville, New York, serving grades 7-8 with a student population of 171. The school is part of the Onteora Central School District.

Onteora Middle School has a predominantly white student population, with 80.7% of students identifying as white, which is higher than the state average of 48%. The school's academic performance has been inconsistent, with fluctuations in its statewide ranking over the years. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school performed below the state average in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math for both 7th and 8th grades, but excelled in Science, with 62.96% of 8th-grade students proficient or better, significantly higher than the state average of 47.41%. However, the school's students performed exceptionally well on Regents exams, with 100% proficiency in Algebra I and Earth Science, far exceeding the state averages.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Bulkeley Middle School and Linden Avenue Middle School, Onteora Middle School has a less diverse student population and a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a significant population of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite the high per-student spending of $28,613 at Onteora Middle School, which is significantly higher than the state average, the school's academic performance in ELA and Math suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as curriculum, teaching practices, and student support, may play a significant role in the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We have been very happy with Onteora Middle School for our son. The teachers are excellent and very kind and caring toward the students and their families. They also have a great music program that we have found just amazing! The district is small and the class sizes are small, which we really like because there is plenty of personal attention for students and more flexibility than larger districts can provide. Onteora has a large budget of $60 million dollars per year and we only have about 1000 students in the whole district. The only downside is that the buildings are old and need renovating, which is slowly happening but really should happen faster with such a huge budget. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
