J Watson Bailey Middle School

Summary:

J Watson Bailey Middle School is a public middle school located in Kingston, New York, serving grades 5-8 with a total enrollment of 968 students. The school is part of the Kingston City School District, which is ranked 717 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While J Watson Bailey Middle School has a higher percentage of White students (56.82%) compared to the surrounding schools, its academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts (ELA) ranged from 28% to 39.3%, compared to the state average of 45.09% to 55.2%. In Math, the proficiency rates ranged from 15.07% to 38.33%, significantly lower than the state average of 40.74% to 51.94%. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with its White students performing better than its African American and Hispanic students.

However, J Watson Bailey Middle School's students perform exceptionally well on Regents exams, with proficiency rates of 98% or higher in Algebra I, Earth Science, and Living Environment. This suggests that the school may be effectively preparing a subset of its students for advanced coursework and college-level assessments. When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Haviland Middle School, M Clifford Miller Middle School, and Linden Avenue Middle School, J Watson Bailey Middle School generally underperforms on state assessments, particularly in Math and ELA, but its Regents exam performance is often on par with or exceeds these neighboring schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Seriously don't even consider sending your child here. No one keeps their child in this district unless they can't afford to leave or they're incredibly delusional. Academics are nonexistent, no graduate is prepared for college, the violence is incredibly disturbing and out of control, teachers have a completely passive role in the education process and many are ill-equiped, not qualified, snarky, and generally awful, and extra curriculars are just another of the elaborate facades put up by the district to lure in new students instead of actually using funding to give students a good education. Do yourself and your family a favor and just stay away. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
