MacArthur School

Summary:

MacArthur School is an elementary school in Binghamton, New York, serving 398 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Binghamton City School District, which is ranked 818 out of 866 school districts in New York and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

MacArthur School consistently underperforms compared to the district and the state in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates. For example, in 2022-2023, only 23.08% of 3rd graders, 15.38% of 4th graders, and 34.33% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district's 26.84%, 27.69%, and 24.7%, respectively, and the state's 44.89%, 48.79%, and 45.09%. The school also has a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (22.36%) and Hispanic (15.33%) students, and a high percentage (over 60%) of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families. As a result, MacArthur School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of New York elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years.

While MacArthur School struggles academically, some nearby schools within the Binghamton City School District, such as Thomas Jefferson School and Horace Mann School, perform better in ELA and Math proficiency rates, suggesting that factors beyond just the district may be contributing to MacArthur's underperformance. Additionally, the school's performance for African American and Hispanic students is significantly lower than the state averages, indicating potential issues with equity and access to quality education. Addressing these challenges will likely require a multifaceted approach, including targeted interventions, resource allocation, and a focus on equity and access to quality education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Despite talented teachers, the school curriculum keeps kids years behind where they should be in terms of achievement. The standards and expectations for the kids could not be lower. If you would like your child to acquire skills that are similar to those being learned by children in other communities the school administration will ask "why the hurry"? Kids start off in kindergarten as prepared as kids are in most average communities and then they loss ground each year. My kids were falling further and further behind in terms of skills compared to their cousins, same age, enrolled in school systems in communities that value education. By high school, kids of professional educated parents can't pass regent or score high enough on AP tests to earn credit. Kids with As in class are getting 65s on Regents and 2s or 1s on AP tests. A number of friends of my kids have been sent to boarding school because none of the area school districts are very good and some are really terrible. There are no private schools except religious ones. This is a community that wants to educate the kids to be good E-J shoe factory workers even though the factories are long gone. If you are educated, this is not the place you want to raise your kids. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
