Vista Academy

Summary:

Vista Academy is a public middle school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 418 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #19, which is ranked 745 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Vista Academy has maintained a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past 7 school years, with a dip to a 1-star rating in the 2020-2021 school year.

Vista Academy outperforms the New York City Geographic District #19 average in most subject areas and grade levels, particularly in Math and Science. In 2023-2024, Vista Academy had 70.86% of 8th-grade students proficient or better in Math, compared to 38.21% for the district and 40.72% for the state. The school also performs well with certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, Special Education students, and Homeless students, ranking in the top 30% of New York middle schools for these groups. Additionally, Vista Academy has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.2 to 16.3 over the past 3 school years, which is lower than the nearby schools in the district.

While Vista Academy outperforms the district and state averages in many areas, it is not the highest-performing school in the immediate vicinity. Nearby schools like Middle School 935 and Highland Park Community School have higher overall rankings and stronger performance in some subject areas, suggesting that there may be opportunities for Vista Academy to learn from its neighbors. Additionally, Vista Academy's performance in 6th-grade ELA, with only 24.46% of students proficient or better in 2023-2024, is an area that could benefit from targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principal was a complete failure as it relates to supporting her teachers, encouraging distributive leadership, allowing a collaborative environment, and creating a culture of respect in her school. Teachers were silenced and did not speak up for fear of her wrath. She was obsessed with Beyonce and made us all watch her videos. The school had about 6 teachers leave in 2014-15 school year. No books in classrooms, teachers were bullied, no support for ELLs or SPEDS, terrible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
