Ps 69 Daniel D Tompkins

Summary:

PS 69 Daniel D Tompkins is an elementary school in Staten Island, New York, serving 771 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #31, which is ranked 398 out of 866 districts in the state.

PS 69 Daniel D Tompkins has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 37.74% White, 2.72% African American, 21.66% Hispanic, and 35.8% Asian. However, the school's racial diversity has declined in recent years, with the percentage of White students decreasing and the percentage of Asian students increasing. Academically, the school has shown mixed performance, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math generally lower than district and state averages, except in 5th grade where the school outperformed. The school's English Language Learner and Special Education students have performed relatively well, but Hispanic and White students have struggled compared to the state average.

When compared to nearby schools, PS 69 Daniel D Tompkins generally performs worse in terms of academic proficiency, with lower ELA and Math scores across most grade levels. However, the school's per-student spending of $29,030 is significantly higher than its neighbors, suggesting it may have access to more resources. Overall, the school's inconsistent academic performance and potential equity concerns raise questions about its ability to effectively serve all students, despite its diverse population and funding advantages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote School is a joke. There are some great teachers that go above and beyond but then there’s others that are still kids themselves and act accordingly. The principal of that school is a joke herself. Lots of parents complain about numerous issues with teachers, with the way the bully and single out kids and concerned parents never get answers. A parent told a few of us parents she had to threaten to call the new channels to get anything done. The staff and principal say they “handle” matters when any concern is brought up and there have been numerous parents complain their child was treated differently based on race and sex. Glad as parents we have a way to communicate and keep each other aware of all the issues going on because the school is quick to reach out to parent chats asking to have convos removed from private parent chats to hush up the things actually going on on that school. Open Quote I am so happy that my Son is in this School. The teachers are so wonderful. I hope everyone is able to experence the warmth and loving feeling that my Son's teachers give to each child. The school work is not hard but hard enough for them to be Challenged and to keep them Interested. He comes home and tells me what he learned and how happy he is with the whole experience. I am happy he wakes up in the morning and wants to go to school. The School is clean and is always being taken care of day after day. The childeren are wonderful and so are the parents. I am so honored to say my Son goes to P.S 69, and I will be very upset when his years there are done, I will never find another school like this one again.!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
