Ps 19 Curtis School (The)

Summary:

Ps 19 Curtis School (The) is an elementary school located in Staten Island, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 454 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #31, which is ranked 410 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ps 19 Curtis School (The) has consistently low academic performance compared to the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math were significantly below the district and state levels across all grade levels. For example, in 5th grade ELA, Ps 19 Curtis School (The) had a 22.41% proficiency rate, compared to 51.02% for the district and 43.68% for the state. The school's performance in Science for 5th grade was also very low at 11.29%, compared to 36.06% for the district and 35% for the state. The school has struggled to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, with rankings in the bottom quartile of New York elementary schools for female, male, African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students. However, the school has performed better in supporting English Language Learners and Special Education students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the same district, such as Ps 44 Thomas C Brown and Ps 18 John G Whittier, also struggle with low academic performance, while some other nearby schools, like Ps 30 Westerleigh and Ps 21 Margaret Emery-Elm Park, have significantly higher academic achievement. The school's high percentage of students from low-income families, with 90.09% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to its academic challenges. However, the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio suggest that it has access to resources that could potentially be leveraged to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Education wise they have the materials but lack the ability to use them correctly. Their school safety is a joke. Kids get bullied and the teachers do nothing. And when they are confronted they act like it's your fault. Their no tolerance for bullying is a joke. The Principal shows very little sympathy in helping kids who are bullied. It seems all she is worried about is to prove the bullying did not happen and move on. The school has really bad ratings in greatschools.com. I think many people enroll their kids because they have no choice. You go where you are zone. And that is why the school cares very little. If you can avoid sending your kids here do it. Open Quote I wish the learning was more advanced. I wish they would acknowledge the smart kids more. I think they should not punish every kid if a couple are bad. It is not fair to the good kids. More teacher support would be nice from the principal. Like any school you have some great teachers and some that should not be teaching. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
