Middle School 358 has shown mixed academic performance compared to the district and state averages. While the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) are slightly below the district's range, its math proficiency rates are on par with or slightly above the district's. The school has demonstrated strong performance for certain student subgroups, such as African American and low socioeconomic status students, who have consistently ranked in the top 25% of New York middle schools. Additionally, Middle School 358 has shown strong performance on Regents exams, with proficiency rates exceeding the district and state averages.

When compared to the nearby schools in the same district, such as Catherine & Count Basie Middle School 72 and Junior High School 217 Robert A Van Wyck, Middle School 358 generally outperforms them academically. This may be due to the school's higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio, which could contribute to its relatively stronger academic outcomes. However, the school's performance for other subgroups, like Asian and special education students, has been more mixed, with lower rankings compared to their peers across the state.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote we have very good teachers but really bad substitutes. the only good substitute we had no longer works there.HW wise, not so much which is a good thing. but it is a zoned school so there is a LOT of bullying. but the staff are great and caring and they know all of us personally since my school only has around 200 kids in total. The principal is amazing he always listens to student's recommendations and even started a student council this year! the only bad thing is the bullying and that if some kids from one class do something they give the whole class detention and say that, "we know its not all of you but its too many of you". About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
