Ps 220 Edward Mandel

Summary:

PS 220 Edward Mandel is an elementary school located in Forest Hills, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 571 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #28, which is ranked 429 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Overall, PS 220 Edward Mandel faces several academic performance challenges, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA) and Science, where the school's proficiency rates are below the district and state averages. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian and White students, as well as English Language Learners and students with Special Education needs, lagging behind their peers in other schools. However, the school's African American students and Homeless students have performed relatively well, ranking in the top half and top quarter of New York elementary schools, respectively. The high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds at PS 220 Edward Mandel may be a significant factor contributing to the school's overall academic challenges.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as PS 206 Horace Harding School, PS 139 Rego Park, and Academy for Excellence Through the Arts, generally outperform PS 220 Edward Mandel on academic measures. However, PS 220 Edward Mandel's performance is stronger than some other nearby schools, such as Elm Tree Elementary School and PS 16 Nancy Debenedittis School, which struggle with even lower academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has been in this school for five years, since kindergarten. There are many pros and cons to this school.
Pros
- most teachers show concern for the welfare of their students and are friendly and approachable
- school has non-academic classes, such as arts, music, and gym available to all students of all grades
Cons
- office staff is about as unfriendly as it gets; they ignore you when you walk in and then act like you disrupted them from something important
- leadership/mgmt is terrible; when all's well, they are sweet; when issues are brought to their attention, they try to sweep it under the rug and pretend nothing happened.
- not all teachers are properly licensed for what they are teaching; ie. g&t, special ed, etc
- parent coordinators switch every other year; the newest one speaks to parents very loudly as if we were all deaf or as if we were kids Close Quote

Open Quote Indoctrination Mill, run by a very unprofessional principal. A handful of veteran teachers are great, but they're quickly overshadowed by poor academia and curriculum. Most teachers are poorly trained with little experience. Avoid attendance at all costs (unless of course you just need a day care). Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
