Ps 80 Thurgood Marshall Magnet School Of Multimedia (The)

Summary:

Ps 80 Thurgood Marshall Magnet School Of Multimedia (The) is an elementary school located in Jamaica, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 368 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #28, which is ranked 429 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $21,859 and a low student-teacher ratio of 12.6, Ps 80 has consistently underperformed compared to the New York City District #28 and the state of New York in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency across grades 3-5. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students performing relatively well, but Hispanic students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds performing poorly. The school's 5th-grade proficiency in ELA, Math, and Science is particularly concerning, falling well below the district and state averages.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Jermaine L Green STEM Institute Of Queens (The), Cynthia Jenkins School, and Success Academy Charter School - Springfield Gardens, Ps 80 generally performs worse in both ELA and Math proficiency across grade levels. This suggests that the challenges faced by Ps 80 may be unique to the school and not necessarily reflective of the broader district or regional trends, indicating the need for a comprehensive review and implementation of targeted interventions to address the root causes of the observed issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a disaster! The principal has no control over any students. There is constant fights between students. Children run around the school all day long while administration sits behind their office doors. I have had older children in the school when Ms. Glenn was principal and it was a great place. Now I can't wait to get my youngest child out. Principal Cox has ruined this school!
Test scores are terrible and the teachers seem to be the same ones that my oldest had. The problems with the school doesn't seems to be the teachers it the terrible administrators. Close Quote

Open Quote My son started this school in September 2014, for second grade. The best thing I can say about this school is that I am happy my son will not return for third grade. From the teachers to the principal, there is no direction or organization. The school is a complete mess, the behaviour of these children is the worst I have seen. There are a few teachers that are an exception but only a handful. It is chaos in the morning with kids throwing their bookbags at other students, cursing at eachother, hitting and pushing. All the while the teachers and para's stand around and do nothing. My son has changed a little and has been bullied. Thanks to the guidance counselor the situation was fixed. Having had a meeting with the principal (Mrs. Cox), I dont even know how she is able to keep her job. The teachers don't respect her and her presence is non-existent. I didn't know who she was until 3 months into the school year. The schools needs work! New teachers who actually care about the growth of these children. A new principal that commands respect and has new ideas to turn the school around. All you have to do is stand in the hallways in the morning and see how damaged the school is. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
