Ps 121 Throop

Summary:

PS 121 Throop is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #11, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, PS 121 Throop's performance on state assessments is generally below the district and state averages. In the 2022-2023 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 30.86% to 41.98%, compared to the district's 34.7%-40.83% and the state's 44.89%-48.79%. In mathematics, the school's proficiency rates were higher, ranging from 35.87% to 54.22%, compared to the district's 38.83%-42.66% and the state's 49.69%-53.68%. However, the school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students, is generally stronger than its overall ranking.

When comparing PS 121 Throop to nearby schools, the Icahn Charter Schools (Icahn 3, 4, and 5) significantly outperform the school and the district as a whole, with proficiency rates often exceeding 80% in both English Language Arts and mathematics. This suggests that the Icahn Charter Schools, which have a different governance and operational model, are able to achieve higher academic outcomes for their students compared to the traditional public schools in the district. Additionally, PS 121 Throop has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which may be a contributing factor to the school's relatively lower academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Since I only have experience with the G & T class, I am not basing my review on the General Education curriculum/classes. This school is part of School District 11 and it is one of two schools which has a Gifted and Talented program in our district. When my daughter was applying, she had the option of attending either Throop or Helen Keller with her test score. After visiting both schools, I felt that Throop gave off a warmer vibe vs. Helen Keller so I picked Throop, and I am happy with my decision. My daughter entered the G & T class this year as a Kindergartener and she had a blast. My daughter has blossomed into a happy and mature girl from a shy and insecure child. When I ask her who her best friend is, she says all of her classmates are her best friends. The school administration is generally responsive and you really get a small school vibe although this school has almost 1,000 students. My daughter's Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Sanchez is an excellent educator and I hope my daughter's 1st Grade teacher is just as great. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
