Ps 86 Kingsbridge Heights

Summary:

Ps 86 Kingsbridge Heights is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-6 with a total enrollment of 1,269 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #10, which is ranked 715 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ps 86 Kingsbridge Heights has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools, with proficiency rates ranging from 20-40% in English Language Arts and 30-60% in Math across different grade levels. However, the school performs relatively better in certain subgroups, such as African American students and English Language Learners, where it ranks in the top half or top third of New York elementary schools. The school has a very high percentage of students (over 90%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite this, the school's spending per student has increased over the years, reaching $19,784 in the 2022-2023 school year, which is higher than the nearby schools in the district.

While the overall academic performance of Ps 86 Kingsbridge Heights is below average, the school's relative strengths in supporting certain student subgroups suggest opportunities for targeted interventions and best practices that could be scaled up. The similarities in low performance among the nearby New York City Geographic District #10 schools, as well as the higher performance of Ps 315 Lab School and the nearby Brilla Caritas Charter School and Brilla Pax Charter School, provide valuable insights for improving educational outcomes in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has not been the same since the principal Mr.Bernardo has retired. Mr Bernardo worked over 20+ years in this school and his leadership created an atmosphere of opportunity and learning, professionalism and excellence. Since his departure many of the programs has swindled. Senior trip program halted. Senior trip consisted of traveling with our senior students to other countries such as France, japan etc. His presence, leadership is felt in a variety of ways. From staff to the code of ethics to afterschool programs and extra activities that made this school great in my opinion is gone. Lack of communication is huge. Administrative staff are caught gossiping and interacting with parents in unprofessional manner. Ethics are gone in terms of how the school communicates with parents. I dislike the school leadership today and am applying to charter schools for my children because its not pleasant dealing with any of them. They are disconnected, gossips and just not a nurturing feel I get from the environment. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
