Ps 246 Poe Center

Summary:

Ps 246 Poe Center is an elementary school in the Bronx, New York, serving 493 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #10, which is ranked 728 out of 866 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ps 246 Poe Center faces significant academic and socioeconomic challenges. The school has a much higher percentage of Hispanic students (84.79%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 68.33% to 88.89% Hispanic. Academically, Ps 246 Poe Center consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of New York elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math that are significantly lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 19.18% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 32.2% in the district and 44.89% statewide. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students (over 97%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

The challenges faced by Ps 246 Poe Center are not unique, as the nearby schools, such as Ps 315 Lab School, Ps 9 Ryer Avenue Elementary School, and Ps 46 Edgar Allan Poe, have similar demographic profiles and academic performance challenges. This suggests that the issues facing Ps 246 Poe Center are indicative of broader challenges within the district. Despite the high per-student spending of $24,470 in the 2022-2023 school year, the school continues to struggle academically, indicating that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution. Addressing the complex factors that contribute to these challenges, such as poverty, language barriers, and resource allocation, will be crucial in improving educational outcomes for the students at Ps 246 Poe Center and the broader community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love, love, love this school. The teachers are amazing as well as the staff. My child has me working double time with math and reading. In fact, I had to give up my knitting because of his desire to read everyday and take regular trips to the library. School is out and all he wants is for school to be opened again.
Hats off to the teachers, from kindergarten to the fifth grade teachers. No need to name in particular because they are all awesome. As for the Principal, she does not rest until work is completed. I have never seen a more involved principal as Mrs. Miller and other schools such as Creston Academy, HSET, and PS 9 that I personally know should do the same.
I look forward to the new school year! Close Quote

Open Quote I am a proud parent of a honor student that graduated from P.S. 246 back in 2010. I now have a 6 year old attending this school. I have to say that the teachers have done and are doing an amazing job in working with my son.
Midway through kindergarten my son had a shocking interest in math and reading and of course I had to support his drive to learn more by buying materials to continue his learning. We are 3 weeks from graduation and now he reads to me and putting me through the test with math, and writing complete sentences.

I have viewed this schools ratings, overall test scores, and reviews and just sadden me.
If every parent were to put their part in the education of their child, this can for sure change. I have witnessed how parents do not participate in the PTA meetings, survey's, meetings, and events the school frequently offer parents. Teachers as well as staff struggle to get parents to partake in these events that is for the benefit and the betterment of our children. I hope that the next year will be a new beginning for the parents as well as students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
