Ps 107

Summary:

PS 107 is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 432. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #8, which is ranked 742 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 107 faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly Hispanic (64.81%) and economically disadvantaged (98.84% receive free or reduced-price lunch). The school's academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the surrounding schools and the New York state average. For example, in 2022-2023, the percentage of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts (ELA) was 29.03% at PS 107, compared to 54.17% at PS 583 and 58.33% at Bold Charter School. Additionally, PS 107's performance has declined over the years, from a ranking of 764 out of 2,201 New York elementary schools and a 3-star rating in 2020-2021 to a ranking of 1,829 out of 2,439 schools and a 1-star rating in 2022-2023.

While PS 107 shares some similarities with the nearby schools, such as high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, it generally underperforms compared to the higher-performing charter schools in the area, such as Grand Concourse Academy Charter School and Success Academy Charter School - Bronx 4. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, the school's declining performance over time, and the relatively high spending per student suggest that factors such as socioeconomic challenges, resource allocation, and instructional practices may be contributing to the school's academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible principle, the teachers are rude and disrespectful to the children which includes yelling in their face or physically yanking them. There is a handful of teachers/aids that actually care for the well being of the school and the children and don’t partake in the negativity, but this principle does not treat staff with respect or professionalism while also allowing covid in the school more than twice.

Would highly recommend you putting your child in a different school Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
