Dearing Laura Elementary School

Summary:

Dearing Laura Elementary School is a public elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada, serving 837 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Clark County School District, which is ranked 7th out of 13 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dearing Laura Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Nevada elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the state and district averages in both mathematics and reading proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's overall mathematics proficiency rate was 15.4%, compared to 32.6% for the state and 30.1% for the Clark County district. Similarly, the school's overall reading proficiency rate was 20.2%, compared to 41.3% for the state and 39.3% for the Clark County district. The school has seen a steady increase in per-student spending, from $8,405 in 2019-2020 to $10,565 in 2021-2022, but this has not translated into improved academic outcomes.

Interestingly, the nearby Wengert Cyril Elementary, Ferron William E Elementary, and Smith Hal Elementary schools generally perform better than Dearing Laura Elementary on academic measures, with higher proficiency rates in mathematics and reading. Additionally, the public charter school Mater Mountain Vista significantly outperforms the district and state averages in both subjects, suggesting that the charter school model may be providing more effective educational opportunities for students in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has adhd and the dual language program set him back (too much to focus on and basically learning half the curriculum since it is one day English and one day Spanish all across through 5th grade now). He tested above average intelligence but his reading grades never went past a C the two years he was there. They gave him spelling words which they NEVER reviewed in class but he was expected to do sntences on them. If I was going to do most of the teaching I might as well do it all myself and avoid the confusion. Right now I'm homeschooling my son and i can see him blossoming, even though it's a tougher curriculum but all in english at last! Close Quote

Open Quote Started my son here today, and I am NOT happy. My son is autistic, and just kind of goes along with what you tell him, so these issues are even huger.....First off when we went to register, we were completely ignored by the staff as they talked to each other casually, then when we DID get someones attention, they BARELY understood english. He apparently has 2 teachers, one day english, one day spanish.........for one thing, I think a kid with special needs needs a little more CONSISTANCY THAN THAT. And another.....we were not told, nor given a choice over him being in a spanish only class half the time. I dont have anything agaist my son learning spanish, but that is a HUGE element of his education that I wasnt told about until he was in it already. For a kid who has a hard time communicating in english, why the HELL would you confuse him with a new language!?!? Then at the end of his first day, I go to pick him up, and I go to the spot where I was told he was going to be waiting....he wasnt there. I was freaking out and caught him JUST before he got on a bus someone was sticking him on, going who knows where....NOT HAPPY, seriously considering homeschooling Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
