Cashman James Middle School

Summary:

Cashman James Middle School is a public magnet middle school in Las Vegas, Nevada, serving 1,189 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Clark County School District, which is the 7th ranked district out of 13 in Nevada and is rated 3 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

While Cashman James Middle School has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (65.69%) compared to nearby schools, it consistently underperforms the Clark County and Nevada averages on SBAC assessments for Mathematics, Reading, and Science. In 2023-2024, only 13% of Cashman James students were proficient or better in SBAC Mathematics, compared to 30.1% for Clark County and 32.6% for Nevada. The school has been ranked in the bottom quarter of Nevada middle schools for the past several years, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, while also serving economically disadvantaged populations, generally outperform Cashman James Middle School on academic measures. For example, Odyssey Charter Schools 6-8 Middle School, which is only 1.65 miles away, had 33.4% of students proficient or better in SBAC Mathematics in 2023-2024, compared to Cashman James' 13%. The high percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients, the school's magnet status, and the increased per-student spending suggest that factors beyond just socioeconomic status may be contributing to the school's underperformance, indicating a need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its students and drive academic growth.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
