Manzano High

Summary:

Manzano High is an alternative public school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 1,365 students. The school stands out for its diverse student population, with a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic (61.39%) and Native American (7.47%) students compared to nearby schools.

Academically, Manzano High faces some challenges, with proficiency rates in language arts, math, and science that are generally lower than the state and district averages. However, the school's student-teacher ratio of 15.3 is lower than the surrounding schools, which range from 6.9 to 24.5 students per teacher. Additionally, Manzano High serves a 100% economically disadvantaged student population, as indicated by the free and reduced lunch rate, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools.

While Manzano High's academic performance may be lower than some of the nearby schools, such as Explore Academy and Mission Achievement and Success 1.0, the school's unique student population and specialized programs offered at other nearby schools, like Abq Sign Language Academy and Highland Autism Center, suggest that there may be opportunities for collaboration and the implementation of targeted strategies to better support the needs of Manzano High's students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote August, 2012. My child graduated 3 months ago. Great English teachers, band director and dedicated science teachers.
The biggest issue I have is about 40% of the teachers wouldn't return a phone call or e-mail that I sent to them. The effective way to get a response (and this was told to me by a secretary!) was to send an e-mail to the teacher with a copy to a Vice-Principal (VP). Then the teacher would respond the same day.
Example in 2012: Left math teacher a phone message. No reply. Sent same teacher an e-mail. No reply. Sent another e-mail with CC to VP; same day reply, something like "Oh sorry, I was busy". Tried to contact same teacher 2 weeks later, with multiple e-mails. Finally, something like "Oh sorry, I guess I lost your e-mail".
I had a similar lack of communication with a World History teacher in 2009. Even the principal failed to get back to me after she typed that she would.
My second major complaint: At least 2 math teachers think it is OK to return a test to the students for a quick review, then collect the tests, thus preventing the student from later re-studying the problems he missed. In addition, this practice prevents a parent (me!) from going over the problems that were missed. I was told I could contact the teacher to have the test sent home, but why would I, knowing their tendency of failure to respond.
My child had great English teachers. History was probably very good; social studies probably good too.
It didn't appear that the administration supported the science department very well, in a place that is less than 5 miles from Sandia National Laboratory. The science teachers did as well as they could. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
