Somerdale Park School

Summary:

Somerdale Park School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Somerdale School District in New Jersey, with a student population of 445. The school has a diverse student body, with a racial makeup of 33.26% White, 22.92% African American, 27.64% Hispanic, 6.74% Asian, and 8.99% two or more races.

One of Somerdale Park School's notable strengths is the exceptional performance of its African American students, who rank in the top 64 out of 463 New Jersey elementary schools in 2022-2023. This is a significant achievement, as many nearby schools, such as Chews Elementary, Laurel Springs School, and Woodcrest Elementary School, have lower performance for their African American student populations. However, the school's overall test scores, particularly in mathematics, are generally below the state averages, with only 2.5% of 8th-grade students proficient or better, compared to the state average of 17.8%.

Somerdale Park School has also seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.1% in 2018-2019 to 13.3% in 2021-2022, which is an area of concern that the school should address. Additionally, the school has experienced a decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 789 out of 1,357 New Jersey elementary schools in 2014-2015 to 872 out of 1,342 in 2022-2023, suggesting the need for continued efforts to improve academic achievement and address the unique needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My experience with Somerdale Park School. Second grader was enrolled. When you walk in the school front entrance, and enter the office , you are not greeted, you are not even looked at. As you walk in, the two front desk staff are behind their desk on their computers. They give you no eye contact unless you walk up close to them. Their facial expression are of a sad lost puppy. They NEVER smile. The school is like walking into a dungeon. I have met with my child teacher, Vice Principle and Principal; The teacher does not challenge the children, instead she expects them to sit in her classroom for 8 hours without any complaints. The vice principal is rude and careless to parents. The Principal is a racist, disrespectful, bully who verbally attacks parents that sit an meet with him over concerns for their children. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!! There is something evil going on in this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
