Pohatcong Township School

Summary:

Pohatcong Township School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, with a student population of 307. The school is part of the Pohatcong Township School District, which is ranked 352 out of 615 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Pohatcong Township School has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (23.13%), its academic performance is generally lower than many of the nearby schools, such as Milford Public School, Harmony Township School, and Holland Township Elementary School, which have higher test scores and better statewide rankings. Pohatcong Township School's test scores are significantly lower than the state averages, particularly in mathematics, with only 9.5% of 8th-grade students proficient or better, compared to the state average of 17.8%.

Additionally, Pohatcong Township School has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 2.5% in 2018-2019 to 13.5% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the state average and many of the nearby schools. The school's performance is particularly low for female students and white students, ranking in the bottom 25% of New Jersey elementary schools for these subgroups in recent years. These challenges, along with the school's declining statewide ranking and star rating, suggest that Pohatcong Township School may need to address instructional quality, resource allocation, and other factors to improve and better serve its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Used to be a great school but many of the great teachers have retired and many of the ones that are left just don't seem to care as much. Seems it's too much work to try to turn things around and it would disrupt their easy going existence on taxpayer's backs. This school needs some real changes. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
