Charles Street School

Summary:

Charles Street School is an elementary school in Palmyra, New Jersey, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Palmyra Public School District. The school faces several challenges, including lower academic performance, higher chronic absenteeism, and a more diverse student population with higher rates of economic disadvantage compared to nearby schools.

Academically, Charles Street School's performance on NJSLA tests is generally lower than state and district averages. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 28.3% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 42%. The school has also experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 4.7% in 2018-2019 to 15.7% in 2021-2022, which is higher than nearby schools. Additionally, Charles Street School has a more diverse student population, with 55.88% White, 13.24% African American, 15.2% Hispanic, and 11.03% two or more races, compared to the nearby Riverton School District, which has a less diverse student body.

Compared to nearby schools, Charles Street School generally performs worse academically, has higher chronic absenteeism, and serves a more economically disadvantaged student population. For instance, Riverton School District, located just 1.08 miles away, has significantly higher academic performance, lower chronic absenteeism, and a less diverse student population. These challenges suggest that Charles Street School may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a former student of Charles Street School and am now a parent of a student. I couldn't ask for a better school for my child to attend. Smaller class sizes allow for more individualized attention. Technology has come a significant way over the years. Palmyra is a hometown district where everyone tries to know and look out for each other. My son will walk in school in the morning and the other teachers and aides even know him by name as it is that close knit. I wouldn't want my children to go anywhere else. He is receiving a wonderful education now as I did 20 years ago. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
