Summary:

Charles Street School is an elementary school in Palmyra, New Jersey, serving 408 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Palmyra Public School District, which is ranked 467 out of 613 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Charles Street School has consistently ranked in the bottom third of New Jersey elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other schools in the state. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on the NJSLA assessments, is consistently below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics were around 30-40%, compared to the state averages of 43.6% and 47.6%, respectively. Additionally, Charles Street School has experienced high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 15.7% to 22.0% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

When comparing Charles Street School to nearby schools, such as Merchantville Elementary School and Eleanor Rush Intermediate School, it becomes evident that Charles Street School is performing significantly worse, with higher statewide rankings, better academic achievement, and lower chronic absenteeism rates. The high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at Charles Street School suggests that the school serves a population with lower socioeconomic status, which may contribute to the challenges the school faces in academic performance and attendance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a former student of Charles Street School and am now a parent of a student. I couldn't ask for a better school for my child to attend. Smaller class sizes allow for more individualized attention. Technology has come a significant way over the years. Palmyra is a hometown district where everyone tries to know and look out for each other. My son will walk in school in the morning and the other teachers and aides even know him by name as it is that close knit. I wouldn't want my children to go anywhere else. He is receiving a wonderful education now as I did 20 years ago. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
