Hillcrest School

Summary:

Hillcrest School is an elementary school located in Somerset, New Jersey, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 476 students. The school is part of the Franklin Township Public School District, which is ranked 443 out of 613 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hillcrest School has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New Jersey elementary schools over the past decade, with proficiency rates on the NJSLA assessments significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 21.8% of 3rd graders, 42.9% of 4th graders, and 21.9% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to district rates of 38.5%, 45.4%, and 49.5%, respectively. The school's math and science proficiency rates are also low, with 5th grade science proficiency at just 10.7%, compared to the district rate of 21.5% and the state rate of 27.5%. Hillcrest School also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 16.6% to 19.6% over the past few years, which are significantly higher than the state average.

While the nearby Pine Grove Manor School and MacAfee Road School in the Franklin Township Public School District generally perform better than Hillcrest School, the schools in the neighboring New Brunswick School District, which serves a more economically disadvantaged population, perform significantly worse across the board. The data suggests that Hillcrest School's challenges may be linked to the school's relatively high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, as well as the overall challenges facing the Franklin Township Public School District, presenting an opportunity for the district and school leadership to identify and address the root causes of the school's performance issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I think this ranking is unwarranted. My son is in the full-time FREE Pre-K program at the school and I have been incredibly impressed with the level of instruction and care by his teacher and the TWO aids in the classroom. Everyone from the security guards on site, to the front office, the Principal, the librarian, the PTO (which is incredibly active) have been stellar and so nice! I was a bit hesitant when my son got assigned to the school. I had attended for 5th and 6th grade in the late 70s and wasn't sure it was still a quality school. However, all my qualms have been lifted. It ultimately comes down to the parent's participation. You are primarily responsible for making sure your child gets the care and attention he/she needs. Hillcrest has made it very easy for me to work with the school to make sure that happens. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
