Barnstead Elementary School

Summary:

Barnstead Elementary School is a public school serving grades PK-8 in Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, with a student population of 469. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to the state average on academic assessments and has a low statewide ranking, placing in the bottom quarter of New Hampshire elementary schools.

Barnstead Elementary's academic performance is a significant concern, with only 26% of students proficient or better in mathematics and 35% proficient or better in reading, compared to state averages of 41% and 53%, respectively. The school's statewide ranking has also declined in recent years, from 139 out of 231 elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 196 out of 234 in 2023-2024, with its star rating dropping from 2 to 1. When compared to nearby schools, such as Northwood Elementary, which has significantly higher proficiency rates, Barnstead's underperformance becomes even more apparent.

Additionally, Barnstead Elementary struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10% of New Hampshire elementary schools for both female and male students, as well as for white students. The school's performance for special education students is particularly concerning, as it ranked last out of all elementary schools in the state. With a growing population of economically disadvantaged students, as indicated by the increase in free and reduced-price lunch rates, the school may need to implement targeted interventions and support systems to address the unique needs of its diverse student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Awful school. Most teachers only stay for a year or two before quitting, so I can imagine they're not treated well. The teachers that do stay are either bad at their jobs or condescending to students. One teacher even laughed at me when I made a small mistake in my work. Teachers have no control over students (as far as I'm aware this is only a problem in older grades). Students are disruptive and disrespectful and nothing is done to fix this problem. The cafeteria, gym and auditorium are all one room and the building is too small, to the point where a closet was used as a classroom last year. Close Quote

Open Quote This school needs new leadership and a fresh perspective on how to treat students. They do not allow for students' individuality and the disrespect toward students who struggle begins with the principal. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
