Kennedy Elementary School

Summary:

Kennedy Elementary School is a public elementary school in Omaha, Nebraska, serving 234 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Omaha Public Schools district, which is ranked 205 out of 212 districts in Nebraska and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kennedy Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (49.15%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 46.18% to 62.87% African American students. The school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Nebraska, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics significantly lower than the Omaha Public Schools and Nebraska state averages. Despite having the highest spending per student ($22,221) among nearby schools and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10:1, the academic performance at Kennedy Elementary remains poor.

The 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate at Kennedy Elementary indicates that all students come from low-income households, a key factor that can impact academic achievement. While the low student-teacher ratio could be an advantage in providing more individualized attention, the school's consistent low performance suggests that other factors, such as curriculum, instructional strategies, and school leadership, may need to be addressed to improve student outcomes. Addressing the complex challenges facing Kennedy Elementary, including racial disparities and socioeconomic disadvantages, will require a comprehensive and targeted approach to support the unique needs of the school community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have freinds who have taught at this school and they arent happy about the direction that it is going. They constantly talk about how rude the students. They cant teach because the kids dont want to learn. The parents are rude and ignorant it just a vicious cycle. Not to mention that the past administrator, Phyllis Brooks was worthless and also scared and afraid of the parent. The kids run the school and no teaching is done. Now with this new 75 north project there are going ot be new staff introduced to the mix...the school will be out of control before we know it. My child used to attend the school and I pulled her out because it was just becoming too much and there was no learning or teaching going on. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
