Clyde Erwin Elementary

Summary:

Clyde Erwin Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Jacksonville, North Carolina, serving 343 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Onslow County Schools district, which is ranked 135 out of 242 districts in the state.

Clyde Erwin Elementary has a diverse student population, with 29.45% White, 24.49% African American, 32.36% Hispanic, and 13.12% two or more races. However, the school has struggled academically, ranking 1103 out of 1505 North Carolina elementary schools with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. This low performance is consistent across multiple years, and the school's African American and Hispanic students perform better than its White, male, and special education students, who rank in the bottom 20% of the state. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 53.29% to 67.35% over the past three years.

In comparison, some nearby schools like Parkwood Elementary and Blue Creek Elementary perform significantly better, ranking in the top 25-30% of North Carolina elementary schools. These schools have higher percentages of White and Asian students, lower percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and better overall academic outcomes. The disparities in performance between Clyde Erwin Elementary's subgroups and the potential impact of socioeconomic factors suggest that the school may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to improve its overall academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't let the test scores or those graphs fool you, this is a fantastic school with a caring, competent, compassionate dedicated staff. My child is in the Spanish immersion program and it is fantastic! It also offers so many other programs that typical elementary schools don't. Clyde Erwin encourages children to be tolerant, kind, think out of the box and strive for greatness. The staff truly care about helping children achieve greater self-confidence, and learning to live in a diverse world as well as typical learning. The principal is phenomenal, truly engaged. We have the means to send our child to any private school we wanted, but wouldn't put him anywhere else! Close Quote

Open Quote My child actually attends from out of district as we were part of the Magnet School lottery. Although the academic ratings aren't brilliant, they are taking great strides to improve.

He is reading way above level in both Spanish and English and at first grade, is learning multiplication. I am assuming that this is because we work with him at home as well, but the teachers and staff are incredibly supportive and are willing to bend over backwards to help a child learn. You can tell that they love not only their job, but the children as individuals. Close Quote

Open Quote I believe that this is a good school to have your children. This Elementary School have a different curriculum as the other integrating the studies of international countries. This school gives the opportunity to the children to explore more about other countries and to work independently. My daughter not only have learn more of United Sates but also about outside of the US. Also help her to be more confident on herself. They also have other extracurricular clubs that help the children to develop in the area that they feel good about them, for example the Chess club, Math club, Book Club, Dance Club, Library, Splash! Spanish Class, Safety Patrol, Robotic Club, Computer Club, and others . . . Yes! they have Spanish inclusion class starting at kindergarten where the children learn a second language since the beginning and is amazing how they learn it well, understands it and love to learn them. In general this school is really great, with a great staff, and teachers, that encourage the children to be a better person and that believe that they can accomplish anything! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
