Pine Valley Elementary

Summary:

Pine Valley Elementary is a public elementary school in Wilmington, North Carolina, serving around 467 students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the New Hanover County Schools district.

Pine Valley Elementary stands out for its consistent academic excellence, consistently outperforming the district and state in standardized test scores across grade levels and subjects. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school had 70% of 3rd graders, 67.1% of 4th graders, and 73% of 5th graders proficient or better in EOG Mathematics, compared to the district's 68.5%, 65.9%, and 67.6%, respectively, and the state's 62.7%, 56.6%, and 58.1%. The school also excels in EOG Reading and Science, with 5th-grade science proficiency at 81.1% compared to the district's 74.1% and the state's 66.2%. However, the school's performance for its African American and Hispanic student subgroups is more mixed, with lower rankings compared to the state.

Despite having a very high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 97.64% in 2022-2023 to 99.37% in 2020-2021, Pine Valley Elementary is able to achieve academic success, suggesting the school effectively supports its economically disadvantaged students. This contrasts with the nearby Sunset Park Elementary, which has a similar high percentage of low-income students but lower academic performance. Additionally, Pine Valley Elementary has a majority White student population, which is notably different from the more diverse student bodies of the surrounding schools, raising questions about the school's ability to address the needs of its minority student subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Amazing! School has excellent teachers who genuinely care about their students. The teachers I know seem to be excited to teach, and are inspirational role models. I am certain my son will not only thrive academically because of Pine Valley, but he will become a good citizen due to the outstanding leadership. Close Quote

Open Quote Don't waste your time looking at Pine Valley Elementary. I thought it would be a great neighborhood school and friendly atmosphere. Not a chance. Kids are bused in from everywhere. I have seen far more bullying at this school then the others my older children attended. It also looks like a PRISON!!! Close Quote

Open Quote Great school! We moved here in 2008. My one daughter started kindergarten there. I have to say that both teachers and staff go above and beyond for these children. The parents care A WHOLE LOT about there school. You can have lunch with your child any time you'd like. Volunteering is always welcome. PTA is top notch. Located in a nice, clean well respected area... WE LOVE IT! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
