Hopewell High School

Summary:

Hopewell High School is a public magnet high school located in Huntersville, North Carolina, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,755 students. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 140 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hopewell High School has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 24.05% White, 47.81% African American, 20.34% Hispanic, and 2.85% Asian. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by state-wide school rankings and test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Hopewell High School ranked 340 out of 640 North Carolina high schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in End-of-Course (EOC) exams are also below the state and district averages in subjects like Biology, English II, and Math I. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White and English Language Learner students performing better than African American, Hispanic, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

Hopewell High School's performance is generally lower than the nearby magnet schools, such as Williams Secondary Montessori and Northwest School of the Arts, which have higher statewide rankings and better academic outcomes. However, it performs better than the nearby traditional public school, Turning Point Academy, which has consistently low rankings and test scores. The rising percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Hopewell High School, from 24.54% in 2021-2022 to 37.15% in 2022-2023, suggests an increasing proportion of students from low-income families, which may contribute to the school's academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My family moved to NC in the fall of 2012, and at that time Hopewell was ranked very high in the state. Come to find that this was due to the way in which they test, and also for their vocational programs for kids not aiming for 4-year college programs.
BIG DISAPPOINTMENT from day 1!!! Over crowded mega school, where your child is a number, counselors don't return calls for days if at all, and teachers go uncorrected and undisciplined for FAILURE TO TEACH, and after repeated complaints from many students in several different class periods. Dumbfounded that any school could continue to operate like this one does. Talk about Waiting for Superman, this school is it! As one former administrative employee (who transferred to the awesome magnet school my son is now enrolled in) said, "They don't want to hear anything bad about their staff. It's the administration at that school who just doesn't want to hear it."
If you care about your children avoid this school, like the plague! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
