Claxton Elementary

Summary:

Claxton Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Asheville, North Carolina, serving 396 students in grades K-5. As part of the Asheville City Schools district, Claxton Elementary stands out for its relatively diverse student population, strong academic performance, and consistent ranking in the top third of North Carolina elementary schools.

Claxton Elementary's student body is 64.9% White, 19.44% African American, 6.57% Hispanic, and 8.84% two or more races, making it more diverse than many nearby schools. Academically, the school's proficiency rates on state tests are generally on par with or slightly above the Asheville City Schools district and North Carolina averages. However, there are significant achievement gaps between White students and African American students, with the latter performing well below the state average. Additionally, the school's low-income student population has increased in recent years, and these students also struggle academically compared to their peers.

While Claxton Elementary outperforms nearby Hall Fletcher Elementary and Ira B Jones Elementary, it lags behind the higher-performing Evergreen Community Charter and Francine Delany New School, which are public charter schools in the Asheville area. Additionally, Claxton Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the past decade, suggesting the school may be struggling to keep pace with improvements at other schools across North Carolina.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Claxton is the most amazing elementary school we have encountered. We were expecting more poor public school communication and narrow mindedness, instead we were met with open hearts and minds. The teachers are competent, experienced, and caring. The administration is helpful and concerned. The academics are right where they should be. My kids are not overwhelmed with homework at a young age. They are learning, growing, and thriving. Thank you, Claxton! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
