Charlotte Secondary

Summary:

Charlotte Secondary is a public charter high school serving grades 6-12 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a student population of 175. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 231 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Charlotte Secondary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of North Carolina high schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years. The school's proficiency rates on state assessments are significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels. However, the school has a diverse student body, with a racial makeup of 13.14% White, 48.57% African American, 29.14% Hispanic, and 9.14% two or more races. This diversity is not reflected in the nearby schools, such as Garinger High School, Hawthorne Academy of Health Sciences, and Military and Global Leadership, which tend to have higher concentrations of White and Asian students.

The school's high student-teacher ratio and low district ranking suggest potential challenges in attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and providing adequate resources to support student learning. Additionally, the school's enrollment has decreased from 175 students in the 2022-2023 school year to 175 students in the 2023-2024 school year, indicating potential challenges in attracting and retaining students. While the nearby schools generally perform better academically, Charlotte Secondary's performance on state assessments varies significantly by student subgroup, with the school performing relatively better for African American and disabled students compared to other subgroups, but still lagging behind state and district averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is awesome! I started when I was in 6th grade and I now I'm enamored by this place! My teachers are so supportive, and I love that we are allowed to move at higher paced rates in the classes in which we excel! I do have to do a lot of work, but it is worth it. When you compare my research skills and writing ability to those of my older sister (who followed traditional CMS schools), it's unfathomable! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
