Strayhorn High School

Summary:

Strayhorn High School is a public high school in Sarah, Mississippi, serving grades 7-12 with a student population of 309. The school is part of the Tate County School District, which is ranked 82 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Strayhorn High School has shown mixed performance on state assessments, with strengths in some subject areas like U.S. History, but struggles in others, particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 23rd out of 231 high schools in 2020-2021 to 143rd out of 228 high schools in 2023-2024. This variability suggests the school may face challenges in maintaining consistent academic achievement. Interestingly, when compared to nearby schools like Hernando High School, which consistently outperforms Strayhorn, and North Panola High School and Rosa Fort High School, which serve predominantly African American student populations and have significantly lower test scores, the factors beyond demographics, such as district-level policies and resources, appear to play a significant role in student achievement.

One of the most notable characteristics of Strayhorn High School is its exceptionally high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This factor likely contributes to the school's academic struggles and underscores the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of the community. Overall, Strayhorn High School faces a complex set of challenges that will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to improve student outcomes.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
