Bowerman Elementary

Summary:

Bowerman Elementary is a public elementary school located in Springfield, Missouri, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 243 students. The school is part of the Springfield R-XII district, which is ranked 182 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bowerman Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Missouri elementary schools, with a ranking between 697 and 788 out of around 900 schools over the past several years. The school has received a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the majority of the past decade, indicating it is performing significantly below average compared to other Missouri elementary schools. This is largely due to the school's very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.9% to 32.9% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, Bowerman Elementary students consistently perform well below the state and district averages on MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests in Mathematics and English Language Arts, with only 23.4% of 3rd graders, 14% of 4th graders, and 17.7% of 5th graders being proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to state averages of 40.8%, 44.4%, and 38.4%, respectively.

The school's poor performance is likely exacerbated by the fact that 90.12% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, much higher than the state and district averages. While Bowerman Elementary spends a relatively high amount per student, ranging from $10,722 to $12,842 per student over the past few years, this has not translated into academic improvements. Nearby schools in the Springfield R-XII district, such as York Elementary, Weller Elementary, and Fremont Elementary, also struggle academically, but some schools like Truman Elementary and Watkins Elementary perform significantly better, suggesting that factors beyond just district and socioeconomic status may be at play.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My step daughter attends this school and it has been the absolute worst. The teachers give false grades for work that didn’t happen . Our daughter is in the 5 th grade and literally cannot spell or read and receives an A on English assignments. We have been seeking testing for a few years now and they conveniently keep losing the paperwork . They simply just put a grade down and herd them through like cattle until it’s not their problem any longer. Kids are also not sent home for having lice so it runs rampant through this school . She has been reinfected multiple times because they don’t require kids to be free from nuts before coming back to school. If you could go anywhere do not go here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
