Andersen Elementary

Summary:

Andersen Elementary is a public elementary school serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade in Bayport, Minnesota, which is part of the Stillwater Area Public Schools district. The school has seen fluctuations in its student racial makeup, with the percentage of White students decreasing from 87.82% in 2020-2021 to 82.99% in 2022-2023.

Academically, Andersen Elementary has faced some challenges in recent years. While the school's 3rd-grade Math and Reading proficiency rates were higher than the district and state averages, its overall performance on the MCA-III assessments has been mixed compared to the district and state. In 2023-2024, Andersen Elementary's proficiency rates in Math (43.9%) and Reading (47.88%) were lower than the Stillwater Area Public Schools district (57.85% and 58.65%, respectively) and the state of Minnesota (45.47% and 49.85%, respectively). Additionally, the school's performance on the Science assessment, while better than the state, was still lower than the district average.

Andersen Elementary's academic performance has also been lower than nearby Brookview Elementary, Lake Elmo Elementary, and Afton-Lakeland Elementary, which have higher proficiency rates and overall SchoolDigger rankings. However, the school's performance for certain student subgroups, such as special education students and students of low socioeconomic status, has been stronger, ranking in the top half of Minnesota elementary schools in 2017-2018.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
