Fridley Middle

Summary:

Fridley Middle is a public magnet middle school serving grades 5-8 in the Fridley Public School District in Fridley, Minnesota. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is 25.37% White, 41.21% African American, 18.12% Hispanic, 5.64% Asian, 0.81% Native American, and 8.86% two or more races.

Fridley Middle has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Minnesota middle schools, ranking 411 out of 545 in the 2023-2024 school year and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance is significantly lower than nearby higher-performing schools like Edgewood Middle School and Highview Middle School, which are part of the Mounds View Public School District. Fridley Middle's proficiency rates on state assessments are significantly lower than the state averages across all subjects and grade levels, particularly for English Language Learners and students with special needs.

However, Fridley Middle's performance for certain student subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students, is relatively stronger compared to the state averages for those subgroups, though the school still lags behind the state averages. The school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 76.11% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and a relatively high student-teacher ratio of 15.8 may be contributing factors to its struggles. The school also has a small alternative learning center, Fridley Middle Area Learning Center, which has even lower academic performance than the main Fridley Middle school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school cares more about keeping bullies and kids with disciplinary problems then taking care of the students who are just trying to get an education without being harassed every single day. Good luck getting anyone higher then the counselor to call you back to solve these issues, and her motto is " they're kids"......seriously.. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
