LILA Upper School consistently ranks among the top high schools in Minnesota, ranking as high as 8th out of 492 schools in 2018-2019. The school's performance on state assessments (MCA-III) is also impressive, with students outperforming the state average in both math and reading proficiency across multiple grade levels. LILA Upper School has maintained high graduation rates, ranging from 92.4% to 97.5% over the past three years, and low dropout rates, ranging from 0% to 3.7%. The school has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 75.21% White, 14.17% Hispanic, 2.53% Asian, and smaller percentages of African American, Native American, and Pacific Islander students. LILA Upper School also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 17:1 to 21.6:1 over the past three years, and a low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 7.14% to 15.51%.

When compared to nearby schools, such as North Lakes Academy Upper School and Forest Lake Area High School, LILA Upper School stands out in several ways. It outperforms these schools on state assessments, particularly in math and reading proficiency, and has a higher graduation rate and lower dropout rate. However, some nearby schools, such as Pines School Day Program and White Bear Transition Plus Program, have more racially diverse student bodies and higher percentages of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting that LILA Upper School may serve a more affluent student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a parent, I am confident that my child is receiving not only the academic opportunities we want for her, but also the personal and emotional support needed for a young child. The teachers share feedback and news regularly in the Pre-K program. I love that even in Pre-K, students learn both Spanish and Chinese. The IB program's structure supports best teaching practices and gives our students the chance to learn about their own community as well as those outside of our city and our country. Our administrators and teachers are very visible, and they attend events outside of the school day, too. I am excited about the new IB programs that the upper school is getting soon, too. This school cares about our kids! Close Quote

Open Quote Both of my children attended LILA and now are in college. They experienced the kind of education that truly prepares students for the world. They're critical thinkers and they're thoughtful about their actions. They also speak Spanish fluently (my daughter is currently studying abroad and taking her college courses in Spanish). Thank you, LILA! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
