Harwood Elementary School

Summary:

Harwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Sterling Heights, Michigan, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school consistently outperforms the Warren Consolidated Schools district and the state of Michigan in academic proficiency across various subjects and grade levels.

Harwood Elementary School's standout performance is particularly notable for its African American, English Language Learner (ELL), and low-income student subgroups. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students scored significantly higher than the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Math. For example, in 3rd-grade English Language Arts, Harwood had 53.4% proficiency compared to 33.1% for the district and 39.6% for the state. The school's African American students ranked 16th out of 348 Michigan elementary schools, and its ELL students ranked 21st out of 98 in the 2021-2022 school year. Even students from low socioeconomic backgrounds at Harwood performed exceptionally well, ranking 181st out of 1,350 Michigan elementary schools in the 2022-2023 school year.

While Harwood Elementary School's academic achievements are impressive, the school has faced challenges with chronic absenteeism, ranging from 7.3% in the 2020-2021 school year to 31.3% in the 2021-2022 school year. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 23.5% in the 2022-2023 school year is still higher than the state's target of 10% or less. Interestingly, nearby New Dawn Academy of Warren and Noor International Academy, both charter schools, have also demonstrated strong academic performance, with some subjects outperforming Harwood Elementary School despite serving a more diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Run Forest Run...as far and as fast as you can from this school. Went from being the top in the district to the worst in less than 4 years. I live 1.5 blocks away from this school and now..I am forced to pull them out. Sure my kids are above reading level in this school, I took them to a reading summer program out of district and they were the below level. Too busy trying to get the ESL kids caught up and acclimated to care about anyone else. I would give this school no stars if I could. Close Quote

Open Quote I absolutely love Harwood. The principal appears to have a lot of interaction with the teachers and the children. My son has been there for 3 years now, and all of his teachers have always had very good communication with me. Their emails are constantly provided on handouts and other methods. I've never waited over a few hours for a response from any of his teachers. I'm always aware of the curriculum being worked on and am aware of my child's homework. The cultural environment in the school is very enriching, and I feel that is important in our global society. Each classroom has an interactive white board, and the school is physically large and in very good condition. It is always very clean. The security doors at the entrance of the building keep the kids safe, by requiring the front desk to buzz parents in and only if preplanned or necessary. I am so glad that my son is at this school. Open Quote So far not impressed with this school. These "late" start Mondays has made it difficult for WORKING parents. The economy today makes it necessary for parents to work to sustain a home, food etc, where can you work and tell your employer--I will be late by one hour every MONDAY???? OK Latchkey is available, but if you have a tight budget wouldnt you rather eat or pay for this service? Have your meeings AFTER school or have a half day!
The district calendar needs some work, each school should have their own calendar so parents/family can schedule their work hours accordingly. Website needs some updating or a more accomplished website coordinator.
I worked for another district and must say their calendars, work schedules and student accomplishments far outshine those in the Warren Con District. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
